Portobello Star
171 Portobello Road
London, England

On my recent visit to Portobello Star, a cocktail bar in London’s Notting Hill neighborhood, I was particularly impressed by their beautiful embossed menus (as well as by their fantastic Manhattan).

Designed in the style of the original Jerry Thomas’s Bartenders Guide, the cover of the menu promises “All kinds of juleps, smashes, cocktails, alexanders, sours, rickeys, punch, exotics, and other fancy drinks”. The style is continued on the pages of the menu, which are nicely typeset and contain a bit of text about each featured drink: ingredients, and maybe a bit of a story.

I particularly liked that the first page granted explicit permission to take a copy of the menu home, so now I’ve got one on my bookshelf next to my cocktail books. Now if only I could get my hands on an original copy of Jerry Thomas’s Bartenders Guide
