Gin Sling

Gin Sling

Gin Sling

  • 1 1/2 ounces gin
  • 1 ounce sweet vermouth
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lemon juice
  • 1 ounce simple syrup
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • Club soda
  • Lemon peel for garnish

Shake all the ingredients except the club soda with ice and strain over ice into a collins glass. Top with club soda and garnish with a lemon peel spiral.

As you can see in the background of this picture, we’ve got a real excess of Meyer lemons at the moment so I’m hunting down recipes for them (this is also what led to the lemonade I posted last week). This was a good one, nice and lemony without being too tart. Gin and lime are a classic combination but gin and lemon works very well too.

  1. Boy, I really wish I liked gin. It’s the base for so many great recipes — the recipe you posted here is a fine example. I find the smell of it very pleasing, but as soon as I taste it, I get a bad feeling. I can’t imagine it could still be because of a particularly ugly episode from my high school days, but who knows. I’m determined to make it my friend. Sarah doesn’t care for it either, though I don’t know why.

  2. I used to not like gin too, I’m not sure why. But I tried it again last summer after not having any for a few years and discovered that it wasn’t so bad after all. A bartender in SF helped out by recommending and letting me sample some good ones.

We’ve made Plantations a couple times recently, which is another good gin cocktail. Try one of those; the grapefruit juice may help ease you into the gin.

  3. Thanks for the tip, Kenn. I’ll definitely try a Plantation; it sounds delicious.

And good luck with getting into Campari, regardless of what Sarai might think about it. I think it’s swell (Sarah’s not as keen). I’ll give you a recipe for a Delirium, created and named especially for my baby. Only problem is, I know the ingredients, but not the proportions. So you’ll have to experiment or wait for me to do so (and share it with you, obviously).
