Man o’ War
- 1 1/2 ounces bourbon
- 1 ounce orange curacao
- 1/2 ounce sweet vermouth
- 1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
- Orange slice, for garnish
- Cherry, for garnish
Shake all ingredients well with ice and serve on the rocks. Garnish with the orange slice and cherry. Alternately, try shaking the cocktail with a small piece of orange and lemon in the shaker to add to the flavor.
I added the fruit in the shaker, one slice of lemon and half a slice of orange, and also opted to serve these in chilled cocktail glasses rather than on the rocks. The recipe as given called for Wild Turkey 101 but I used Maker’s Mark, which is what I have on hand.
This drink is a relative of the Manhattan. It doesn’t contain bitters but does have bourbon and sweet vermouth, the other two ingredients in a Manhattan. You might call this a “Citrus Manhattan”, due to the orange curaco and lemon juice. The dominant flavor definitely came from the orange, with a little added tartness from the lemon.
