This is the classic Mai Tai recipe, the one Trader Vic created right here in Oakland in 1944. It should not be confused with the "Hawaiian" or "Island" Mai Tai, nor any of the fruit and flower-laden monstrosities that have become somewhat synonymous with the name of this cocktail over the years.
San Francisco’s East Bay — the area that includes Oakland, Berkeley, and Alameda — has become something of a tiki mecca in recent years. There’s always been a tiki presence here; this is where Trader Vic’s, the birthplace of the Mai Tai, originated in the 1930s, after all. But lately our selection of tiki bars [...]
This weekend Tiki Central is hosting its eighth annual Bay area tiki crawl:
Come join in the biggest Bay Area Tiki Bar Crawl yet! Four days! Ten Bars! Savor the world of tiki with visits to bars and restaurants both new and legendary all over the Bay Area. Celebrate the rich history [...]
We didn’t plan on hitting Tiki Ti on our recent trip to LA, but sometimes you just need to tiki it up. We were near a beach, experiencing some real summer weather for a change, and we heard the call, so into Hollywood we went late one afternoon.
Not much has changed here since my last [...]
While perusing the Barware, Bar Tools, Barphemera, etc. group on Flickr, I came across an amazing home tiki bar, by someone named Dr. Zarkov (not the Dr. Zarkov?!?).
And don’t miss the adjoining Bettie Page themed bathroom.
I’ve long dreamed of having a nice home bar but, alas, rental prices in the bay area necessitate cutting [...]
Last night was was the kick-off party for
International Flight Lounge, a new monthly event at
Forbidden Island in Alameda. International Flight Lounge is described as
"A hi-flying mix of the best uptempo '60s French pop, Euro beat and film soundtracks, exotica, British invasion, and much more".
Getting out for a drink usually just means going to one of the neighborhood bars, but we've recently visited two of the nicer bars in the bay area: Bourbon and Branch and Forbidden Island.
After nearly two years, I finally made it out to Forbidden Island, the new (well, newish) tiki bar in Alameda. Residents of Alameda refer to themselves as “island people”, so a place like this fits in well. (For those unfamiliar with the area, Alameda really is an island in the San Francisco bay.)
Forbidden Island’s reputation [...]
Last summer I had a brilliant idea: Create a Wikipedia-like web site focused on everything tiki: bars, cocktails, whatever. It was going to consist of a Wordpress blog and, of course, a wiki for user contributions. It was going to have a a similar look to Wikipedia, but tiki-themed. The name I chose for it? [...]
The weather is warming up, and you know what that means: The return of tiki season! We’re not quite there yet, but we’re getting close. To kick off the start of the season, Forbidden Island, a new tiki bar in Alameda, is having a grand opening tonight. I discovered this via a post on Humu [...]
